Bring Back the Laws of Hywel Dda!

British law has come into focus recently with the remarks of a Welshman, Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. There are many irregularities in British law which discriminate against different sections of society and an overhaul is necessary, though it is doubtful that this will happen. The laws of Hywel Dda were of great benefit to the people of Wales hundreds of years ago and did not discriminate, as they were based on traditional morality and religious values.

The contemporary move into a secular British society does not take into account many of the eternal values which govern human communities, particularly now that Britain has become an increasingly multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, and there is certainly a need for these concerns to be addressed. This is what the Archbishop is pointing to, and why he has raised this question and brought it into the arena of public debate. The people of Wales should reflect on whether British law and justice is entirely suited to their needs and the circumstances of Wales, or whether Welsh laws, as those of Hywel Dda, modified to suit present conditions, should be applied to the nation.

The laws of women:

A woman could only be beaten by her husband for three things: for giving away something which she was not entitled to give away, for being found with another man or for wishing a blemish on her husband's beard. If he beat her for any other cause, she was entitled to the payment of sarhad.

Yeah! Right!.

Pillock.

laws should be for the time they cover ,we need to get rid of a whole shed full of them not add old cultural laws back whether Sharia or Hywel Ddda

Well I agree we need to get rid of a whole shed full of them.
But I have another idea : strike out for independence and get rid of the lot of them, and then codify our own laws afresh!

That's all very well but what happens if a wife blemishes her husband's beard?

We need to know.

How many times do I have to say :

"modified to suit present conditions"

???

Incidentally, this could also be a part of Sharia law because all good Muslims wear a beard as I discovered in Saudi.

So, a blemish on your beard, sir!!

What ever happened to the true socialist cries of hanging kings with the entrails of popes.

Rather than allow people to claim exemptions from law, would it not be more constructive to move towards accepting one set of laws for all of Europe, and eventually the entire planet.
Or are there those that believe themselves different, so different that "their" group of people are above accepting a unified social and criminal code ?

Patriotism and religion are links in the chain that enslave the poor.

Fine, provided that these universal laws were just and equitable and were applied without discrimination to all citizens regardless.

"...universal laws were just and equitable and were applied without discrimination to all citizens regardless."

Now then, funny enough, there`s the European charter of human rights, the open border agreement, which most countries, including the French and the Germans, have welcomed without hesitation.
Britain has opted out!
Wales, under the leash of London, has been left in a ghetto!
I`d we rather emulate the europeans of today, before trying to re-invent some mythical lifestyle of long ago.

Fair comments, and Wales should opt in where Britain opts out. Why should Britain always be unco-operative with Europe and go its own way? Either you're in or you're out.
