When Will They Ever Learn?"

Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the young men gone?
Gone for soldiers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

The threat posed by paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland is the highest it has been in six years, an independent watchdog said on Wednesday.
One senior police chief warned that Republican dissidents could even stage attacks on the British mainland, 15 years after a ceasefire by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Militant splinter groups now pose a "very serious" threat to peace in the long-troubled British province, said the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC), which reports every six months to the London and Dublin governments.
The report comes at a tense time for Northern Ireland, with the main Protestant and Catholic parties split over when justice and policing powers should be devolved from London to their shared Belfast administration. Northern Ireland has been largely peaceful since 1998 peace accords between the Protestant and Catholic communities. But the killings of two British soldiers and a police officer in March -- the first of their kind in about a decade -- has highlighted the renewed threat.
The Continuity Irish Republican Army (CIRA) splinter group claimed the police murder, while the Real IRA (RIRA) was behind the soldiers' deaths. Both groups are opposed to the peace process. "Our detailed analysis of the activities of CIRA and RIRA below shows that during the period under review the threat was very serious," the IMC said in its review of the six months from March to August. "The overall level of dissident activity was markedly higher than we have seen since we first met in late 2003".
The seriousness, range and tempo of their activities all changed for the worse in these six months. "During this period dissident republicans were violent and showed an intent to kill if the opportunity arose. The three murders in March were by far the most serious incidents but there were many others involving extreme ruthlessness".
Catholic Republicans want Northern Ireland integrated into the Republic of Ireland, while Protestant Unionists favour it remaining part of the United Kingdom. Catholic socialists Sinn Fein, the political wing of the now-defunct main Provisional IRA, now share power with the Protestant conservative Democratic Unionist Party in the Northern Ireland devolved administration. The watchdog said: "The violence of the dissidents over the six months under review is an attack on the peaceful political approach adopted by Sinn Fein and is designed to affect policing and to raise public fears about security".
Former Scotland Yard anti-terrorism chief John Grieve, a member of the watchdog, expressed concern about the capacity of dissident Republicans. "It bears no resemblance to the threat that (we) were talking about from the past," he said. "However it is serious. It is severe. It is something we should take seriously but it is not going to unravel the political process".
But asked if the dissidents could target the British mainland, he replied: "That's always possible". Reacting to the report in Dublin, Irish Justice Minister Dermot Ahern strongly criticised the ongoing activities of dissident groups. "These are a small hardcore of unrepentant criminals who have no support amongst the Irish people, North or South," he said.
At least 3,500 people were killed during three decades of conflict fought by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and Protestant paramilitary groups, known as The Troubles.

Comment: The Irish Question has been festering ever since 1921 when the situation was left unresolved. There will be no peace until the 6 counties join together with the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland in a United Ireland. Partition has never worked, whether in Kashmir, Cyprus, Ireland or Korea. The island of Ireland has been conquered, settled, colonised and plundered for generations and people do not forget. A northern Irish peace agreement can halt hostilities but will never quench the desire of those who seek, by whatever means, to be free to govern themselves. The Westminster government appears to think that Northern Ireland can be gradually devolved and become a semi-autonomous region of the British state. It is mistaken.

When the World Ends

When the world ends politicians will be discussing how much money to spend on armaments to finance current wars and who is to blame for leading the nation to war with antagonists who refuse to give in and accept a tailor-made peace deal.

Libertarianism

The vision of the Libertarian Party is a society with minimal state interference—where individuals can live their lives as they see fit. There are more than 60 million people in this country: each one with their own priorities and their own desires. They should be able to pursue those desires in whatever way suits them best, provided they adhere to the central tenet of Libertarianism—the non-aggression axiom. This can be summarised as: "You shall not initiate force or fraud against someone else's life, liberty or property." (Chris Mounsey)

CATALONIA MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Bullfighting in Spain has been a hallowed sport for centuries but now Catalonia is on the verge of banning it completely. Attendances at the gory spectacle have dropped considerably and there is now little support for the sport from the Catalans. It is another step in the movement to distance Catalonia from Spain and has the backing of Brussels..

Welsh Independence Follows Scotland's

GORDON SNP CELEBRATE CANDIDATE ADOPTION

Gordon Scottish National Party has formally selected Richard Thomson as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming General Election, following an ‘adoption’ meeting in Inverurie.

Richard (33), who lives in Ellon, was endorsed at a packed public meeting in Saturday evening which saw SNP members from all over Scotland and local members of the public enjoy an evening of music and entertainment.

Speaking in support of Richard were Aberdeen North MSP Brian Adam, and First Minister and Gordon MSP Alex Salmond. Music was also provided by talented young local accordionist Gregor Allan from Tarves, and by champion Scottish fiddler Paul Anderson from Tarland. A number of other top political figures, including Maureen Watt MSP and SNP President Ian Hudghton MEP were also in attendance.

Despite being free to enter, the evening succeeded in raising £9,000 towards Mr Thomson’s campaign, thanks to a combination of an auction, a financial appeal, a raffle and donations from local SNP branches. Auction items included a weekend at a top Highlands spa hotel, tickets to see Rod Stewart in Inverness and a signed copy of the Scottish Government’s ‘Your Scotland, Your Voice’ white paper on the Independence referendum.

However, one prize in particular caught the attention of those present – a bottle of Aberlour Malt Whisky, which Mr Thomson had won earlier in the year from the Liberal Democrat stall at the Lourin’ Fayre. The bottle, signed by both Mr Thomson and Mr Salmond, raised £100 for election funds.

Speaking in support of Richard, Mr Salmond said:

“In Richard, we have a fantastic candidate. Crucially, he’s got much real world experience outside politics but is still experienced in politics. He’s a great presence on the doorsteps and I know he’s been working tirelessly over the past two years as our candidate on behalf of the people of Gordon.

“He’ll be a fresh voice for Gordon and an enthusiastic local champion - exactly the sort of MP which Gordon – and Scotland – needs at Westminster in the years ahead.”

After thanking everyone involved in the evening’s preparations, including the Liberal Democrats for the whisky which he described as a ‘generous and unexpected contribution’ towards his campaign, Mr Thomson highlighted the task ahead in the last few months before the election, and warned party activists that both he and they would need to do everything they could to secure every possible vote could between now and the election.

“We know that thanks to SNP achievements - the council tax freeze, the small business bonus, Town Centre Regeneration Funding, record police numbers, planned transport investment, a new Ellon Academy – we’ve achieved more for Gordon in the past 26 months of Government than Lib Dem representation has achieved in the last 26 years.

“The Scottish Government has been achieving some great things. However, as we go into what promises to be a tight few years financially, Scotland is going to need a team of MPs at Westminster prepared to stand up for the Scottish interest, and making sure we get a fair deal in the years ahead.

“The SNP’s group of MPs – whom I was proud to work for at the House of Commons for a time - has long punched well above its weight. With an enlarged group, and the possibility of there being a hung Parliament, by electing an SNP MP in Gordon, people can make sure not only that they have the best possible representation at home, but also that Scotland and the North East can have the political leverage we’ll all need at Westminster in the years ahead.”

“We could be on the verge of something big here in Gordon, and we’ll never have a better chance to win than we do now. Together, with your support, I know we can take our message to the voters of Gordon and win their trust.”

Can Clean Parties Come Clean?

PRESS RELEASE. DATGANIAD I’R WASG.
Think Different. Think Plaid.

Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales .  www.plaidcymru.org

Embargo – for immediate release

Plaid Call on Cameron to come Clean on Defection

Plaid Cymru have today called for Tory Leader David Cameron and Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan to explain their roles in the fiasco surrounding the defection of Mohammad Asghar after the new Tory recruit stated on local radio that the primary motive for his switch was assurances by his new party that he would be allowed to recruit his own daughter as his press officer.   Plaid had previously informed Mr Asghgar that following the Sir Roger Jones report for the National Assembly and the Sir Christopher Kelly report into the Westminster expenses scandal - both of whom recommended the prohibition of any future staff appointments of family members - that it would be improper of him to employ his daughter Natasha.

Jonathan Edwards Plaid Cymru Parliamentary Candidate for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr said:

“Public scrutiny of this shoddy affair has so far concentrated on the unprincipled and un-honourable actions of Mr Asghar himself and the opportunism of the National Assembly Tory Leader Nick Bourne.   However, the more revelations that appear in the media it seems that the Tory UK high guard also have some serious questions to answer.”

“Ever since the expenses scandal we have had David Cameron playing the morality card saying that his party would fully comply with the Kelly recommendations.    However, at the defection press launch the Shadow Secretary of State Cheryl Gillan was present.   Cameron can not therefore merely brush his hands and deflect blame onto the Tory Leader in the National Assembly, as a member of his front bench was clearly intrinsically involved in the whole affair.”

“Following subsequent interviews by Mr Asghar himself in which he clearly states that his primary motive for joining the Tory party was that he had been given assurances that he would be allowed to employ his daughter, the people of Wales and the UK deserve answers from Mr Cameron and  Ms Gillan.   There’s a lot of mud flying around as a result of this dishonourable act and at least some of it is going to land on Mr Cameron or Ms Gilan or both.”

“Firstly was David Cameron informed of the reason for the defection by the Shadow Secretary of State for Wales?   Secondly, who in the Shadow Cabinet sanctioned the defection on the basis that Mr Asghar would be allowed to employ his daughter?   Does David Cameron believe that the clear moral guidance provided by both Sir Roger Jones and Sir Christopher Kelly in relation to the employment of staff members should be treated with contempt?”

“At the end of the day either David Cameron is guilty of hypocrisy and his public statements on the expenses scandal are empty promises, or a senior member of his Shadow Team has gone out of her way to undermine him.   The question is which of these two scenarios are true.”

Comment:

If, as is likely, the Conservative Party wins control of government at the coming general Election it is essential that it comes across to the general public as fair, clean and transparent. Anything less than whiter than white would be regarded as a betrayal of its promises to the electorate. In a true democracy political parties need to be monitored and scrutinised to ensure than they stick to their assurances and promote radical policies which will auger real and lasting change and bring freedom and prosperity to all the nations of Britain.

According to some geologists and scientists, we are in the middle of a deadly 11,500 year cycle when the ice age comes back. The start of the cycle is marked with a Polar reversal, super volcanic activities, massive earthquakes, Tsunamis and nasty hurricanes. 11, 500 years back, the last ice age happened and what we have started experiencing – all happened. In the last one year the earth experienced the largest three earthquakes in the last two hundred years. The under water volcanoes and earthquakes have gone up 88% over the last three years. The continental earthquakes have gone up by 62% during the same time frame.

Independence for Catalonia

Catalonia is not Spain - Wales is not England

Catalonia Shows the Way towards Independence

Making a difference in Catalunya
News from Jill Evans MEP covering the unofficial poll on independence in Catalonia.

Catalunya: December 14th

By jillevans
The votes are counted and the referenda in Catalunya are over for now. Almost 95% of those who voted wanted independence, and nearly 30% voted. That’s a pretty good turnout for an “unofficial” poll organised by the people themselves. There was huge interest in the voting and preparations have already started for the next round of elections in February.
I hope I will be able to go as an observer again. There was so much enthusiasm and excitement around the whole event. It is so refreshing to see that people care so deeply about democracy and their right to have a voice that they actually organise a referendum themselves. We are always being told that people are not interested and don’t care – often by the parties who don’t listen.
I stood in the freezing cold on a square in Vic last night with crowds of Catalan people, young and old, waiting for the results of their referendum. I knew then without a doubt that Europe was changing for the better and that we in Wales are part of that change too.

Let My People Go - Kurdistan, Catalunya...........and Cymru

"No nation can, or should, hold dominance over another nation." Barack Obama

President Obama's statement has global implications. It applies universally, to all nations which remain under the domination of other nations. Here we feature the Kurds and the Catalans, but we might equally mention the Bretons, the Cornish, the Welsh, the Scots, the Galacians, the Sicilians, the Basques, the Flemish, the Armenians* and many other national groups which remain under the control of larger, more dominant nations. Many of these political inequalities have arisen as a result of former colonialism or arbitrary division when boundaries were created, or have resulted from one nation annexing another nation and incorporating it into its dominions (e.g. Wales).

According to the latest results of the unofficial poll in Catalonia it appears that 95% of the Catalan people want freedom from Spain.

*Armenia, like the majority of the former Soviet republics, suffers from the continuing influence of major foreign powers in its economic, financial, and political life. Despite its commitment to independence and sovereignty, it continues to be played like a pawn on the strategic chess board, in a modern version of the Great Game, between the Anglo-American powers in London and Washington, on the one hand, and certain circles in Moscow. Thirdly, and perhaps as a consequence of the first two factors, the national political leadership has not managed to articulate and pursue a long-term vision for the nation.

Catalans vote in symbolic independence referendum

Residents of Spain's rich northeast go to the polls this Sunday in a symbolic vote on independence. Organizers hope the plebiscite will underscore Catalonia's desire for even more autonomy from Madrid.

The vote on Catalonian independence is not legally binding, but its backers hope that it will put pressure on the region's political parties to call for a real referendum on secession in the future.
Surveys have shown that a sizable minority in Catalonia would like to see the northeastern region, which includes Barcelona, Spain's second-largest city, granted independence beyond the considerable autonomy it already enjoys.
Polls opened in the early morning for some 700,000 people, including many of the region's immigrant population, who represent about 10 percent of Catalonia's population of seven million.
Catalonia accounts for about 25 percent of Spain's gross domestic product and has its own language and customs.
Sunday's vote also comes as Spain's Constitutional Court prepares to rule on the legality of the region's statute of autonomy. There are fears that a negative outcome of that decision could fuel further separatist demands.
The statute, approved by the Spanish parliament and endorsed by Catalan voters in a 2006 referendum, expanded the powers of the regional government.
Prime minister not concerned
Catalan regional elections must be held by the end of 2010 and any surge in separatist sentiments could be a serious problem for Spain's Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero. The premier put on a brave face on Friday, exclaiming that "these independence votes are going nowhere."
However, Uriel Bertran, one of the leaders of the pro-independence movement, said "this will be the beginning of an adventure towards self-determination."
Although opinion polls differ on the extent of support for independence in Catalonia, Sunday's poll is viewed as the next step in ratcheting up the autonomy drive. An initial vote in September held in the small town of Arenys de Munt ended with more than 96 percent in favor of independence.

The Kurdish Tragedy

The 25 million Kurds are the largest ethnicity in the world without a state of its own. Promised - but never granted- their own country after WWI, Kurds now live in parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia and Azerbaijan. They are almost universally despised for asserting their identity. The government of Turkey spends US$6 billion a year fighting its Kurdish separatists. Saddam Hussein's Iraq has tried to wipe out its four million Kurds altogether: Some 300,000 Kurdish civilians "disappeared" between 1983 and 1987. Then Iraq launched a religious war against them (complete with chemical weapons), razing 4,000 villages and killing another 100,000 Kurds. Many of those who survived are now starving, thanks to the UN's embargo against Iraq.
In Iran Kurds are not allowed to use their Kurdish names. In Turkey, speaking Kurdish even in private was a crime until 1991. Turkey continues to deny that Kurds have a separate ethnic identity - the official story is that Kurds are Turks who got lost in the mountains and forgot they were Turkish.

A Defector's Excuse

"My politics are very much in line with wanting a stronger Wales within a successful United Kingdom.

Plaid’s ultimate aim of independence for Wales puts this at risk. I argued against independence while a Plaid member. I was in a minority and my view was defeated. Plaid Cymru does not believe in the United Kingdom, or developing a strong Wales within that union."

According to the Chairman of Plaid Cymru, Moh. Asghar never raised the independence issue at any of the meetings he attended and his view, never expressed, was not defeated.
Thus Mr Aghar never "tried to change Plaid Cymru from the inside."

It follows that his defection is entirely for the sake of self-advancement, as the Tories rejected him before he decided to join Plaid and are now willing to accept him following his defection. They may well live to regret it.

Honouring Llywelyn - Cilmeri 11th December 1282

Cilmeri

(by Peter N. Williams Ph.D.)
For many who do more than just love Wales, Cilmeri is its most hallowed and saddest spot, for it is here, in a quiet meadow just outside the town of Builth Wells (Llanfair ym Muallt) that Welsh-born native prince Llewelyn the Last (Llewelyn ap Gruffudd) was slain. To understand the significance of Cilmeri, we must turn back in history to the Edwardian Conquest of Wales during the latter part of the l3th Century.

The ambition of King Edward was to unite the whole of the island of Britain under his kingship, and this meant he had ultimately to conquer Wales and Scotland. Prince Llewelyn had somehow manage to form a unified Wales under his leadership, but faced formidable problems in holding together all the quarrelsome parts of his kingdom. This mean that Edward's task was much easier than perhaps expected, considering the early defeats that the Welsh armies inflicted upon the invading English, not used to fighting in mountainous terrain. There was much resistance to Llewelyn's authority among many of the minor Welsh princes (forever quarreling among themselves) as well as from the semi-independent lords of the Marches.

It was therefore not too difficult for Edward's much larger armies to eventually wear away the forces of Llywelyn through attrition and to impose harsh restrictions upon the Welsh leader. At the Treaty of Aberconwy in l277, Llewelyn was forced to accept humiliating terms and to give up most of his recently acquired lands keeping only Gwynedd west of the Conwy River. Edward followed up his successes by building English strongholds around the perimeter of what remained of Llewelyn's possessions and strong, easily defended castles were erected at Flint, Rhuddlan, Aberystwyth, and Builth, garrisoned by large detachments of English immigrants and soldiers.

Though Edward was now firmly in control of his Welsh territories, yet Prince Llewelyn was not yet finished. During a period of peace between the two leaders, his wedding to Elinor at Worcester was honored by the attendance of the English king. It was a period in which the Welsh leader bided his time and pondered his options. When the people of Wales, under his brother Dafydd, eventually rose in a massive revolt at the loss of control over their customs and their law and the restrictive and oppressive English rule, Llewelyn was the unanimous choice to lead their cause:

"The gentlefolk of Wales, despoiled of their liberty and their rights, came to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd and revealed to him with tears their grievous bondage to the English; and they made known to him that they preferred to be slain in war for their liberty than to suffer themselves to be unrighteously trampled upon by foreigners." (Brut y Tywysogion, l256).

At first, Llywelyn's revolt was successful, the castles of Builth, Aberystwyth and Ruthin falling into his hands, and a large English force was utterly destroyed in the Menai Straights in Gwynedd. Edward was forcedto devote the whole of his kingdom's resources to deal with the "malicious, accursed" Welsh, yet it was a mere chance encounter in a meadow at Cilmeri that ended the Welsh dream.
At Cilmeri, in the quiet green meadow on the road from Builth Wells to Llandovery, you will see a tall granite monolith. At first glance, It looks like one of the ancient standing stones erected thousands of years ago by our neolithic ancestors, yet a closer inspection reveals it to be a monument erected in l956 to the memory of Prince Llywelyn "our last ruler." (Ein Lliw Olaf).

Llywelyn, separated from his army, found himself in a minor skirmish in which he was killed by an English knight unaware of the Welsh prince's identity. Upon discovery, Llewelyn's head was sent to London for display as that of a traitor. Edward's troubles with the rebellious Welsh, for all practical purposes were at an end. Henceforth, Wales was to live under an alien political system, playing a subordinate role as an integral part of the kingdom of England. A poignant ballad by modern Welsh songwriter and nationalist Dafydd Iwan expresses the grief of the Welsh nation at the loss of their beloved Llewelyn: "Collir Llywelyn, colli'r cyfan"(losing Llewelyn is losing everything). Cilmeri is indeed holy ground.

Comment:
727 years later, those who, as nationalists, desire to be free of dependency on Britain and English cultural and economic dominance, and restore their legitimate rights to self-government, both in Scotland and Wales, and in Cornwall,  are in fact traitors to the constitution of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. They are still rebelling against the Act of Incorporation if 1535/6 and the Act of Union of 1707. They are not, however,  traitors to their own nations but rather patriots who seek restitution of national rights of sovereignty.

England (renamed Britain) has no wish to let go of control of its former neighbouring colonies despite its policy of devolution, which is seen as regional devolution rather than national devolution. Thus, Britain does not wish to publicise commemorations such as Cilmeri or recognise and develop for tourism Welsh and Scottish battlegrounds. It would prefer that history is forgotten at home, yet remembered for overseas campaigns and victories (Trafalgar for example, or Waterloo).

In recent times a lid has been kept on devolving too many law-making powers to the Scottish parliament and the Welsh Assembly and the introduction of LCOs is an example of limiting the effectiveness of the Welsh Assembly and of delaying measures already approved within Wales to be brought into law. Many smaller countries than Wales and Scotland govern themselves responsibly and effectively. The denial of powers of governance and the reluctance to transfer authority to England's colourful Celtic neighbors is nothing short of megalomania.

Population Key to Climate Control

Population control called key to deal

By Li Xing (China Daily)
Updated: 2009-12-10 07:37

COPENHAGEN: Population and climate change are intertwined but the population issue has remained a blind spot when countries discuss ways to mitigate climate change and slow down global warming, according to Zhao Baige, vice-minister of National Population and Family Planning Commission of China (NPFPC) .
"Dealing with climate change is not simply an issue of CO2 emission reduction but a comprehensive challenge involving political, economic, social, cultural and ecological issues, and the population concern fits right into the picture," said Zhao, who is a member of the Chinese government delegation.
Many studies link population growth with emissions and the effect of climate change.
"Calculations of the contribution of population growth to emissions growth globally produce a consistent finding that most of past population growth has been responsible for between 40 per cent and 60 percent of emissions growth," so stated by the 2009 State of World Population, released earlier by the UN Population Fund.
Although China's family planning policy has received criticism over the past three decades, Zhao said that China's population program has made a great historic contribution to the well-being of society.
As a result of the family planning policy, China has seen 400 million fewer births, which has resulted in 18 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions a year, Zhao said.
The UN report projected that if the global population would remain 8 billion by the year 2050 instead of a little more than 9 billion according to medium-growth scenario, "it might result in 1 billion to 2 billion fewer tons of carbon emissions".
Meanwhile, she said studies have also shown that family planning programs are more efficient in helping cut emissions, citing research by Thomas Wire of London School of Economics that states: "Each $7 spent on basic family planning would reduce CO2 emissions by more than one ton" whereas it would cost $13 for reduced deforestation, $24 to use wind technology, $51 for solar power, $93 for introducing hybrid cars and $131 electric vehicles.
She admitted that China's population program is not without consequences, as the country is entering the aging society fast and facing the problem of gender imbalance.
"I'm not saying that what we have done is 100 percent right, but I'm sure we are going in the right direction and now 1.3 billion people have benefited," she said.
She said some 85 percent of the Chinese women in reproductive age use contraceptives, the highest rate in the world. This has been achieved largely through education and improvement of people's lives, she said.
This holistic approach that integrates policy on population and development, a strategy promoting sustainable development of population, resources and environment should serve as a model for integrating population programs into the framework of climate change adaptation, she said.

What he said in January 2008......

Andy Newman: Some in the Labour party, and on the left of politics, criticise Plaid Cymru because they say that nationalist parties are divisive. Do you think there is any danger that the widespread acceptance of multi-culturalism in Britain could be weakened by an increased stress of Welsh, Scottish and English identity? Or can being Welsh be just as inclusive as being British?

Mohammad Asghar: Plaid Cymru is a party which welcomes all people of all nationalities and religions and is not divisive at all. Wales has a proud history of welcoming people of all races as our citizens, going back many years to the days when Cardiff was a thriving sea port. There are many people who have come to live in Wales who are very committed to Welsh culture and the Welsh language, as I am, and who are keen to play their full part in the life of our country. I am a Muslim and am proud to be Welsh.

Dai Llwyd AM states: "We now call on Mohammad Asghar to take the honourable decision to resign his seat as a Plaid Cymru AM," Mr Lloyd said.
"The people of the South Wales (East) region did not want a second Tory AM to represent the area - they elected a Plaid Cymru AM.
"Mr Asghar does not have the political mandate to sit in the assembly as a Conservative member..."

Considering that the Labour Party put a ban on folk standing on both the list and constituency for the Assembly, which is questionable... perhaps there is a better case for disallowing list AMs/MSPs from changing parties. While constituency AMs/MSPs/MPs are all elected on their personal merits (supposedly) rather than the party, list AMs/MSPs and MEPs are all elected for the party in question, a key distinction. Ashgar clearly saw Tory success in the Euro elections as being his meal ticket in the near future.

Both PC and the SNP can claim to have selected the first Asian/Muslim representatives to the devolved legislatures though. I think an important point here is even if someone comes from either/both of these groups, it doesn't make them a good politician necessarily - e.g Mohammed Sarwar MP, Labour crook based in Glasgow. On the other hand, the SNP was lucky to have the late Bashir Ahmad, who was a genuinely pleasant and decent person that I had the privilege to meet in the Glasgow East run-up - he provided a decent counterpoint to the nutters who attacked Glasgow Airport. It's a shame that Ashgar couldn't be such a good ambassador for Welsh Muslims/Plaid etc.

Mohammed Asghar AM defects from Plaid to the Tories

One of Plaid's most right-wing AMs has left the party today and crossed the floor to join the Tories, appearing at a Tory Press Conference without having told his staff (who will most likely resign en masse) or anyone in Plaid.

Mohammed Asghar made history as the first ethnic minority Assembly Member. However it quickly became apparent that he didn't really hold any political positions associated with Plaid or with Welsh nationalism. He became known for inviting the Israeli Ambassador to the Senedd, a move that caused great controversy and debate.

I personally am glad he has gone (they're welcome to him), but it is still an act of treachery.

South Wales Argus - The opponent of full Welsh independence told the Argus he had joined Plaid in 2000 as a way of getting into the 'political system' - with the hope he could change the party's policies from the inside.
But yesterday, amid allegations from political opponents that he had 'jumped before he was pushed' to make way for Plaid MP Adam Price's goal of joining the Senedd as a list AM, the Pakistan-born politician said he had failed.

It's more obvious in the case of a list member than a constituency member, since the list election is based on voting for a party rather than an individual, but even at constituency level, the idea that people win because of who they are rather than the party which they represent is something of a convenient constitutional fiction.

Gareth Hughes could very well be right to suggest that yesterday’s Tory crowing could be a blessing for Plaid.

Comment:  we know "Oscar" is a Muslim, but is he Welsh, English, British or Pakistani?
We know he's not a socialist, and now he's not a Welsh nationalist but a British nationalist and a Tory. He was that all along, obviously, then infiltrated Plaid to change it from the inside (as he stated above). He did not succeed, but now that he is in the Tory camp does he intend to change it from the inside or is he now in his true element?

I wholeheartedly agree with every word you wrote. I've always considered this proportional representation system to be nothing but 'nonsense' bewildering to the voter and as has been, sadly, demonstrated yesterday, a wonderful opportunity for unprincipled 'weasels' to use the system for their own ends. Its all very well for Plaid to demonstrate how politically correct and "progressive" it is, but, the hiarachy within the party really does need to investigate the political background and motives of their bed fellows much more carefully than they do at present.
