Scotland´s independence programme is well on track. As predicted the three British parties - Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat are united in their opposition to independence and have been attempting to trap Alex Salmond into holding an immmediate referendum on a clear choice YES or NO on Scottish independence. The Chief Miinister has resisted the temptation for obvious reasons. If the vote were held today it might well be lost. The election will therefore be held in the aurumn of 2014.
With regard to Welsh independence, as this blog predicted the way forward in Wales is to await Scottish independence to be achieved when the dismantling of the Union has become a fait accomplis. By that time the public will have become more accustomed to the changing political scene and will view Welsh independence as a real and viable possibility. The eventual outcome will be the formation of the four nations of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland (united) within the European Community of nations.
Duh? get real mate! There are only 168k nett taxpayers in Scotland and even less in Wales. without South east England we wont even have enough money to maintain our roads, let alone schools etc and Europe is not in a position to assist any further as it is bankrupt. The largest Celtic population in the uK is in England, this Nationalistic thing is at best ill informed. how about we stop fighting and get on with living and moving forward on our tiny little island.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, those of us who support Welsh independence understand that we are taking more than we give, and we don't like it! Why do you think Wales should want this dependency culture? The reason south east England is able to contribute so much taxes is because the UK government is using its economic levers to increase wealth creation in London and the south east. The government of an independent Wales would use its economic levers for to create wealth in Wales.

Well said Iwan Rhys....
ReplyDeletewhat the anonymous muppet above seems to ignore is that states do not derive their income solely from taxation. Indeed, one of the greatest 'income' streams utilised by the oh so clever UK government is reckless and unsustainable borrowing, with 50 billion per annum interest payments due. The overheated and again unsustainable shitty of London also generates a huge amount of money, but evades even larger amounts of tax payable and concentrates dangerously in one sector and area, a large and volatile veritable uncontrolled super-volcano. hence the mess we are in right now.
ReplyDeleteSmaller countries do manage and there are increasing numbers of them as the years go on. Not by reckless borrowing but often by utilising core assets such as minerals and fuels for the benefit of their people, creating sustainable employment and wealth that circulates in the economy, rather than farming out exploitation of such riches to greedy companies for a quick backhander or a job once one is no longer an MP. I could go on, but the UK is a shipwreck of a country and certainly isn't a nation. I could do better with my Lego set to be honest!
Why independence in Europe. Not independence at all and merely swapping one set of masters for another. Independence should be outside the EU and with our own currency and army.
ReplyDeleteAnything else is subservience by a people afraid to let go of the apron strings but prepared to swap Mother England for Mother Merkel.
The anon before the last is the one with whom I fully concur!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anon 17 January 2012 16:08.The Uk as a huge debt to GDP ratio!
