Gobaith Cymreig - Wales Expects ......

Wales expects that Rhodri Glyn Thomas AC/AM, as Minister for Culture, will do his duty and provide the means for the establishment of a National Newspaper in Welsh.
It is simply what is required for the continued health and survival of Welsh culture whether or not it makes an initial profit. Culture is too important to be tied solely to economic viability, as with the Millinium Stadium and Amgueddfa Werin Cymru Sain Ffagan.

  1. The existing welsh publications do not make enough money to even break even on their costs.
Prove indeed as to the lack of demand for such publications.

  2. Same old story. As long as they put the 'culture' tag on this, they think that it justifies spending public money on a proposed newspaper that will just be another drain on an alraedy stretched purse.

To equate the cultural importance of this proposed publication with The Welsh Folk Museum at Saint Fagans as an icon of 'culture' is just laughable as all Welsh people can benefit from a visit to Saint Fagans and have a jolly good day out into the bargain.

  3. These things DO need to be economically viable. I'm sure there is room and money to be made from a good Welsh language online newspaper with decent investigative journalism.

Btw, the Millennium Stadium will eventually make enough money to call itself sustainable.

We in Wales need to be modern and more radical. Establishing a Welsh language daily for its own sake is not right. And anyway, Dyddiol cyf could have ended up publishing a really crappy newspaper that nobody liked. That would have been a waste of public money!

  4. Ned Thomas researched the subject for years; Gwynfor Evans was willing to go on a hunger strike for the sake of a potential broken promise, where was the economic argument there ? have we so soon forgotten the principles on which our party was created.

  5. The sons of Gwynfor will never forget and will keep the faith. We follow in his footsteps.

  6. Ned Thomas researched for years and found that the project wasn't viable so decided to fall back on the Welsh cultural heritage of getting someone else to pay for it.

Sorry Ned, the majority of us have had enough of your cultural scrounging.

Plaid's principles just depend on a begging bowl mentality, as ever.
